Walking is often used as a metaphor to symbolize our seemingly endless trudge down this long road we call life. There is comfort and security in knowing that you have someone to walk with you for the long haul. Even brief, meaningful companionships carry profound significance.
So what does it mean to walk with God? Is it the same as walking with a friend or loved one throughout life? Is it the same as being aware of His presence before you? Is it a privilege only a few can experience? One answer is sure: God always has His arms open for His children.
What the Bible says
Enoch was the first man in the Bible to have walked with God.
Enoch lived 65 years and became the father of Methuselah. Then Enoch walked with God 300 years after he became the father of Methuselah, and he had other sons and daughters. So all the days of Enoch were 365 years. And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him (Genesis 5:21-24).
Enoch was the first man in the Bible to have experienced the pleasure of walking with God. He leaned on God in every facet of most of his life until the day he died. And when his life on earth ended, the Lord met him in heaven.
Being able to walk with God no doubt requires a spiritual life and strong faith. Enoch’s story tells us that when you have a burning zeal for His kingdom and bring Him in every aspect of your daily life, walking with Him is not an impossible feat.
How can we walk with God?
First of all, to walk with God means to follow Him, to let Him be your shepherd. Psalm 23 is one of the most precious passages in the Scripture:
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
He leads me beside quiet waters,
He refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for His name’s sake.
Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff,
they comfort me.
The Lord uses the analogy of the shepherd to describe how He guides us for all the days of our lives. We also call God our Father because this is what our relationship is with Him. When we go through life and face our trials, the comfort of His guiding hand and voice will help us walk the right path. Even when we encounter difficult ordeals, we know that our God will be there to be our source of strength and refuge.
Meditation is another key means to walk beside God. Perform the kind of meditation where you talk with God, and He with you.
When you meditate, you are in a state of internalized attention and positive emotional equilibrium. This is when you experience a kind of calmness where you can detach yourself with the physical world and its physical desires. Having freedom from worldly entanglements is the first step to communicating with God from the inside. Visualize God bathing you in His light and purifying you.
When you carry this awareness of God’s presence in your life throughout all your days, you will begin to start your journey with God and seek His kingdom.
